EUGENE, Ore. - The Lane County Sheriff's Office wants to warn you about a phone scam that's been going on lately.

They've received reports of phone calls from people posing as members of the sheriff' s office.

During the phone call, they say you missed jury duty, haven't paid parking tickets or that there's a warrant for your arrest.

And as a result, they want you to pay them to take care of it through prepaid credit cards or gift cards.

The Sheriff's Office says - anyone asking for money in the form of a gift card - is a major red flag.

“A government agency will never ask for payment in the form of prepaid credit cards. So if the IRS or the sheriff's office requests a payment from you in the form of an iTunes gift card - that's a scam,” said Sgt. Carrie Carver with the sheriff's office.

When in doubt, they recommend hanging up, or calling back to verify the number is legitimate.

The Sheriff's Office also says they will never call and tell you that they have a warrant for your arrest.
